Lab FAQ
Answers to questions about our clinical lab in St. Helena
How do I obtain a blood test?
You can request blood glucose (blood sugar), pregnancy and cholesterol tests yourself, but most other blood tests require written authorization from a physician, dentist or nurse practitioner.
How do I prepare for a fasting blood test?
A fasting blood test enables technologists to analyze your blood without the influence of food or drink. If your doctor tells you to fast for your blood test, do not eat or drink anything except water for 12 to 14 hours before you have your blood drawn. Most people find it convenient to have their blood drawn before breakfast.
Some tests that require fasting include:
- Fasting blood sugar
- Triglycerides
- Lipid panel
- Glucose tolerance
There are additional tests that require fasting. Your doctor will tell you if you should fast before your test. If you're not sure, please call Adventist Health St. Helena diagnostic laboratory at (707) 963-6483.
When can I take my blood test?
Our lab is available on a walk-in basis 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. every day, 365 days a year. When you arrive at the hospital, first check in at the admitting office to the right of the front desk. Then you will be directed to the lab for your bloodwork.
